The suspension, which was announced at the Egmont Group meeting held in China from July 2 to 7, 2017, followed the refusal of Nigeria to make NFIU autonomous in its funding, operations and management of financial intelligence. The failure of Nigeria to pass a law making the NFIU independent is the kernel of the matter.
Duru said that the national discourse by CSOs became necessary in view of recent happenings in the nation’s polity.
He said that the meeting was organised by his organisation in collaboration with Justice for All of the British Council, adding that participating CSOs were drawn from across the country
He said: “The bill is draconian, anti-media and anti-masses. Every Nigerian must stand to resist it. All stakeholders must come out en-mass to shoot down the Bill at the Public Hearing on Monday, 7th March, 2016
