The 23-time Grand Slam champion ended her remarkable career at last year’s US Open but has avoided claiming that she “retired” multiple times since, and doubled down on her comments recently in a hint that she could one day make a return to the court.

On Monday, Williams played only her second singles match since she returned to action at Wimbledon in June after a year-long absence from competition, beating Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz to reach the second round of the Toronto Open.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion made a tearful exit in the first round 12 months ago after retiring during the first set due to a leg injury and doubts have been growing about whether she would return.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion pulled out along with sister Venus Williams and last year’s Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin. The former world No 1 has not played since retiring injured in her first round match at Wimbledon, where she slipped on the grass and hurt her leg.

The great American has not had a particularly impressive season, losing early at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, but she remains the biggest star in the women’s game by a distance and would surely have been amongst the favourites to win the gold medal in the Japanese capital.

Having come into the tournament with low expectations, Williams had looked solid through her first three matches, and, with big names falling by the wayside, the American surged up the list of title favourites.
