Sunderland’s win over champions, Leicester City, proves the Black Cats are getting “better and better”, Victor Anichebe has said.
The Black Cats beat the Foxes 2-1 at the Stadium of Light to make it three wins out of four games for David Moyes’ side, who have turned things around after a terrible start to the campaign.
Sunderland produced their best football of the season so far as they penned Leicester back for the first half-hour, albeit they were unable to make their dominance count until the second period.
But Anichebe said Sunderland fans will be “proud” of the way their team performed.
“I would definitely say it was [the best we have played this season] for the first 30 minutes,” said Anichebe, who was again outstanding throughout.
“The fans were great – they were right behind us and really pushed us on.
“If anyone was to turn on the TV – or for the fans watching in the stadium – they would see how we played in the first half-hour, and be really proud – we were passing it, getting in between the lines, creating chance after chance after chance, and they made some really crucial clearances.
“As the weeks have gone on, we are getting better and better.
“You could see in the first 30 minutes we absolutely battered them and should probably have capitalised while we were on top, but the game slowed up a bit.
“We showed great resilience in the second half.
“The manager said we needed to go again, and that’s what we did in the second half – we were all over them.
“It would have been better if we had kept a clean sheet, but they are the champions at the end of the day and it was a tough game at times, but we are happy to get the three points.”
Sunderland’s win lifted them off the foot of the table and up to third-bottom, just a point away from clambering out of the relegation zone.
