The Senate on Tuesday moved against the N700 monthly charge being collected from electricity consumers across the nation.
The Senate asked the National Electricity Regulatory Commission to mandate the Distribution Companies to discontinue with monthly charges.
Also, Upper Chamber has directed the NERC to mandate DISCOs to discontinue the practice of making consumers pay for meters, poles and transformers, which by law are the properties of DISCOs.
However, the senators agreed that consumers that purchase those items should give notice of purchase to DISCOs and should be entitled to recover their expenses from subsequent consumption of electricity.
The Senate resolutions was sequel to a morion sponsored by Senator Sam Egwu, who expressed dissatisfaction with the exploitation of consumers by DISCOs.
Egwu lamented that some areas in the country are still billed through the estimated billing system, which did not make provision for payment of only electricity that is consumed.
