The Senate on Thursday directed the Nigeria Police Force to generate revenue in order to carry out its activities in the year 2015.
But in an interview with newsmen, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Tsafe, said although the police force was not a revenue generating institution, it must tighten up.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Paullius Igwe, gave the directive when Nigerian Police Force appeared before the committee to defend its 2015 budget.
Igwe explained that there is the need for agencies to block all areas of revenue leakages.
He said considering continuous fall of oil prices and the attendant cut in the budget of all government organisations, there was the need to tighten up and also close all areas of revenue leakages.
The Chairman said: “If you organise yourselves well, you will generate enough revenue, provided such revenue is well accounted for.”
While speaking, DIG Tsafe said that just as so many institutions of government were now looking inward to generate more revenue, the Police will do as directed by the Senate.
He said: “We have so many services we render to the members of the public.
“Very recently, the minister organized seminars for internally generated revenue and definitely we will come out when it is finalized.
“We have already explained that the budget implementation was at 40 per cent.”
Tsafe however did not disclose the proposed figures for the 2015 budget.
He promised that the Police was adequately prepared to provide security for the 2015 general elections, adding that there will be effective and adequate deployment of members of the force.
