Senators of the Unity Forum on Tuesday said there is procedural error in the planned probe of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar, over corruption allegations.
The Senate had last week received a petition from Senator Obinna Ogba, submitted on behalf of the Anti-corruption Network against Umar on allegations of corruption.
But moves by the spokesman of Unity Forum, Senator Kabiru Marafa, to pick holes in the petition against the CCT chairman was blocked by the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
This was despite the point of order raised by Senator Marafa during plenary.
Marafa, when he addressed newsmen after the plenary, explained that the petitions submitted against office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Umar were not properly presented based on the Senate rules.
He said the presenter of the petitions did not indicate his name in the petitions, according to Section 41(5) of the Senate rules.
He explained that the presentation of the petitions was unethical, according to the rules of the Senate, adding that it is of public knowledge that Saraki was an interested party in the case against Umar because he is currently facing allegation of false declaration of assets before the CCT.
Marafa also revealed that the Executive Secretary of Anti-Corruption Network is Senator Dino Melaye, who is also a member of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, there by making it difficult for Umar to get fair hearing during the investigation.
He described the decision of Saraki to rule him out of order as open tyranny, hoping that the Senate president will not continue with that attitude.
