The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara; and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, were among dignitaries that fled the Eagle Square venue of the May Day rally in Abuja on Monday.
This followed the pandemonium that arose from a protest by workers.
The rally, organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, turned rowdy and violent as workers disrupted proceedings over the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The workers protested the continued absence of both Buhari and Osinbajo from Workers’ Day celebrations since coming into power in 2015.
For this year, they said Buhari should have at least sent Osinbajo.
Buhari was represented at the rally by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige.
After the exit of the dignitaries following the refusal of the workers to allow proceedings continue, the few labour unions that took part in the march past had no dignitary to take the salute.
