The District 9125 of Rotary Club International on Saturday immunised no fewer than 2,000 children against polio in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Gloria Thomas, the State Representative of the Nigeria National Polio Plus Committee of Rotary Club in Plateau State, said the gesture was aimed at ensuring complete eradication of polio in Nigeria.
Thomas said the exercise was in fulfillment of the pledge made by the club in 1985 to ensure that children enjoy a polio-free world.
She said: “Rotary International in 1985 made a promise that it will make world polio-free for all children and billions of dollars have been dedicated to ensure that this is actualised.
“What we have done today is part of our efforts in fulfilling this solemn pledge of ensuring that our children grow up in a society free of polio.
“At least, children who missed the last exercise during the just concluded Polio plus Day would certainly have benefited from the one we just administered to them.
“Every Polio plus Day, Rotarians always come out en mass to support and ensure that every child gets immunised; to protect and boost their immune system against diseases.”
Thomas said that the club would intensify efforts and move into the nooks and crannies of the state to sensitise and as well immunise children against the dreaded childhood diseases.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kanam, Alhaji Mohammadu Mu’azu, commended the efforts of the club at ensuring that polio was completely eradicated.
Mu’azu also commended the efforts of the Plateau State Government for its support toward ending polio in the state.
He pledged his readiness to partner with organisations and spirited individuals to end polio and ensure that Nigerian children get a better future.
