The Sokoto State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Abdulkadir, on Wednesday confirmed the killing of a 17-month-old girl and her mother by armed robbers at Gundumi forest along the Sokoto-Isa Road on February 26.
Abdulkadir, who made the confirmation to the News Agency of Nigeria in Sokoto, said: “I can confirm the dastardly killing of the baby and her mother.
“We have since deployed more patrol teams along the road to redress the ugly trend of the resurgence of the activities of armed robbers along the road, especially near the forest.
“We have also intensified efforts to trail the fleeing armed robbers, with a view to bringing them to book.”
Abdulkadir also confirmed the surrender of some arms by 27 repentant bandits in Isa Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Commissioner enumerated them to include AK-47 riffles, pump-action guns and pistols, among others.
Also commenting, the Chairman of Isa Local Government, retired Colonel Garba Moyi, expressed delight with the development.
Moyi commended the state government for setting up an “amnesty committee” for the area, headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Bashir Garba.
Moyi said: “The state government intends to assist the repentant bandits with seed money to start businesses, build houses and cultivate farmlands.
“This is to facilitate their re-integration into the society through earning their living legally and contributing to national development.”
