The Senate on Thursday set up an Adhoc Committee to investigate the management of funds appropriated for the power sector since 1999 and the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, an aspect of which is now the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
President Olusegun Obasanjo initiated the privatisation of the power sector in Nigeria.
Obasanjo’s successors, late President Umaru Yar’Adua and former President Goodluck Jonathan, also continued with the process.
The Senate also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to order the TCN to reconnect Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, back to the national grid.
The Senate’ decision was sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume, who expressed dissatisfaction with the disconnection of Maiduguri from the national grid and the general power degeneration across the country.
In addition, the Senate strongly condemned the inability of the TCN to provide continuous and uninterrupted power supply to all parts of the country.
It also directed the Joint Task Force to clear Maiduguri of insurgents and provide security for the TCN to reconnect the area to the National Grid.
It also urged the Federal Government to complete the Manbila power project.
In his own comment over the motion, the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, said inadequate power supply In the country has adversely affected economic growth and become a great concern to the nation.
