Some electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday called on the incoming government to probe the privatisation process in the power sector.
The consumers, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, said the privatisation of the sector was fraught with fraud.
One of them, Thompson Adegbite, said the incoming administration must ensure that the process was thoroughly investigated to check corruption in the sector.
Adegbite said unless there was a deliberate effort by the government to hold some persons responsible for the problems of the industry, Nigerians would continue to get poor electricity supply services.
“For the power sector to work efficiently, the incoming government must take a second look at the privatisation of the power sector,” he said.
Adegbite alleged that the sector was not working because the Power Holding Company of Nigeria was sold to companies that lacked capacity to administer the sector.
Another consumer in the area, Mallam Musa Habu, said the power sector was too critical to the development of any nation to be neglected.
Habu said the only way the incoming administration could achieve any meaningful development was to overhaul the sector.
“The incoming government must prioritise the overhaul of the power sector because of its importance to the economy,” he said.
Habu maintained that no country achieved greatness without a robust power sector that could drive its industries.
Helen Chigogwu, a civil servant, blamed successive governments for the problems in the sector, adding that for it to work effectively the incoming government must have the political will to probe the sector and the privatisation process.
Chigogwu said: “The incoming government must have the political will to probe the sector, not minding whose toes that will be stepped on.
“Until we begin to do the right thing in this country, we will continue to fail in our quest to develop.”
On his part, Shedrack Williams said the epileptic power supply in the country had brought hardship to Nigerians.
“The incoming Buhari government must take the power sector seriously for him to make any impact on the lives of Nigerians,” Williams said.
