The Nasarawa State Police Command said it would investigate what lead to the death of two students of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia.
Patrick Garba, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, stated this on Wednesday in Lafia while briefing newsmen.
According to Garba: “Police got information this morning that a student of the polytechnic was knocked down by a hit and run vehicle on Tuesday July 26, around 8:30pm.
“We immediately mobilised unarmed officers to the school because we got information that the students blocked the high way and were molesting motorists.
“Our men, who were led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, have not yet briefed me on further developments.
“When we got reports that other two students were shot, we were surprised because our men went to persuade the students to open the high way.
“So, as it is now, we do not really know who shot who until we investigate and get full briefing from those officers who were on ground.”
Garba explained that when the command got information that there were gun shots, “we called the Area Commander and officers who led the team and they said they did not order anybody to shoot”.
Garba further said the accident happened in the night and since the vehicle did not stop, nobody knows the number plate, colour and type of vehicle.
He, therefore, appealed to the students to be law-abiding and not to take the law into their hands as the police would do everything possible to protect lives and property in and around the school.
Jafaru Habibu, Public Relations Officer of the Student Union Government, said the students were protesting the death of a student who was knocked down by a vehicle on Tuesday.
Habibu explained that many students had been killed on the highway and they complained to the management of the school on the need to construct speed breakers.
Habibu further alleged that while the students were protesting, the police shot two students.
One died instantly while the “second one is still receiving treatment at the hospital”.
The protesting students, carrying sticks and leaves, blocked Lafia/Akwanga highway for more than four hours.
Commuters were stranded as some of their vehicles and goods were vandalised by the angry students.
