A 33-year-old security guard from Benin Republic has denied being a serial rapist and a robber.
The suspect, Okilose Alex, a father of three, however would have a tough battle of convincing a law court of his innocence, for many circumstances seemed to be conspiring against him.
Alex is not only being questioned by detectives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos Police Command, Ikeja on how he came to be in possession of a gun, he is also being accused by two ladies of attempting to rape them at machete point until they had agreed to allegedly pay him N5,000 each to stop him from raping them.
As if those situations were not trying enough for the security guard, there is a pending case of rape leveled against him.
Alex had piteously denied all allegations, including the old rape case, saying he is innocent.
SARS detectives are however not buying his story of innocence, especially since Alex claimed that the controversial gun was given to him by the community people where he works, then turned around to spin another theory that he recovered it from an armed robber.
Police believe he uses the gun to rob and that the machete found with him at his duty post was his only tool for guarding and protecting the community.
A police source said: “He is a security guard, but he used to steal things from people returning from night vigil.
“He also used to rape ladies.
“A gun was recovered from him.
“He stopped two ladies going to club and said he must rape them.
“He collected their phones.
“He said that if they didn’t want to be raped by him, they should give him N5,000.
“He wanted to rape them, but the girls refused.
“They however accepted they’ll bail themselves.
“He collected N5,000 each from them.
“When the girls reached the club, they told the people at the club, who now went and got OPC (Oodua Peoples Congress) people.
“OPC got him and took him to his house.
“He said it was machetes he uses for his work, but OPC found gun in his apartment.
“When OPC asked him how he got the gun, he said he recovered it from armed robbers.”
According to the police, after Alex was transferred to SARS, he changed his story, contradicting even his statement in his case file.
The police source added: “Suddenly, for reasons we could not fathom, he got to SARS and changed his story, claiming that it was the community where he used to work as a security guard that bought the gun for him.
“He mentioned a particular old man in the community, and two others as those that gave him the gun.
“SARS went to the old man.
“He was a sick, over 70.
“When Baba saw SARS men and this guy pointing at him that it was him who gave him gun, he panicked.
“His BP rose.
“He was rushed to General Hospital, Ikeja.
“He was there till the following day, but died.
“He mentioned an innocent man and indirectly killed him.”
Stating his own side of the story, Alex insisted that the community, where he works at Iju-Ishaga, Foursquare Street, contributed money to buy the gun for him to make his job easier.”
Further insisting that he never attempted to rape the girls, but only collected N500 from each of them, Alex said: “I didn’t know where the girls were coming from, but I saw them running.
“The time was about 1am.
“They said they saw their brother in the club and ran out because they didn’t want him to sight them.
“One of them said she told her brother that she was going to school at Ajah.
“Maybe the brother came to investigate.
“They said they wanted to search for another club.
“A friend called them that their brother was coming out, that they should hide and she’ll call them later.
“I decided to escort them to the club.
“But it is normal for those of us who are security to ask for something.
“I asked them what they would give me.
“They gave me N500.”
Since SARS was more interested in discovering how and where he got the gun, Alex said: “I didn’t mean that Baba gave me the gun.
“I meant that it was Baba who gave me the money on behalf of the community.”
He added that the only person he lied to that he took the gun from an armed robber was his fellow security guard identified as Baba Bunmi.
Alex said: “When Baba Bunmi asked me where I got the gun, I didn’t want to tell him that the community contributed N12,000 for the gun.
“I lied to him.
“I told him I got it from an armed robber.
“When the OPC came, they said the girls claimed I wanted to rape them.
“But it’s not true.
“It’s not easy for a security guard to rape at night.
“My only mistake was in collecting N500 from each of the girls.”
Also attempting settle the dust raised by his past allegation of raping a lady, Alex said: “Yes, I had been taken to police station before for rape, but that also was not true.
“I didn’t do it!”
