The Plateau State Police Command has vowed not to take it lightly with any journalist who publishes information that “seeks to tarnish the image of the Nigerian Police Force”.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, ASP Tyopev Mathias Terna, issued the threat in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday in reaction to a report carried by The Eagle Online.
In the press statement, titled: “Re: Gunmen kill ex-commissioner, kidnap LG boss,” Terna said the report, published by The Eagle Online on December 24, 2016, distorted some facts.
He said: “In order to put records straight, the command wishes to state that a distress call was received by the DPO of Mangu Division on the 22/12/2016 at about 2200 hours that is (10pm) that armed robbers blocked Mangu Hale/Jos road and immediately dispatched the patrol vehicle with Registration number MGU 447 with Operation Rainbow inscription attached to Mangu Commanded by Inspector Ezekiel Jeremiah and four others to race to the scene of crime.
“On arrival the personnel were able to rescue Hon. Nicholas Vongsing the Chairman of Langtang South Local Government, his Driver and Hon. Pastor Sargwak Wazhi a former Managing Director of Fertiliser Blending Plant Bokkos as well as former Commissioner of Agriculture in Plateau State.
“Hon. Pastor Sargwak Wazhi was later confirmed dead by the Doctor on duty in a Cottage Hospital in Mangu because of the blood he lost as a result of the robbery attack. While the Driver was admitted of the wounds he sustained as a result of the attack but we later discharged the following day.
“The command therefore warns journalists to stop lying against it since none of the officers confirmed the purported kidnapping of the Langtang South local government chairman Hon. Nicholas Vongsing as published by Eagle Online. Hon. Chairman of Langtang South has not been kidnapped as reported.”
