The Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Azi, has said poor parenting is responsible for drug addiction in the society.
Azi condemned the deplorable level of decay in the family.
He said poor parenting is impacting negatively on the lives of children.
The speaker made these remarks while addressing traditional rulers and stakeholders at the two-day workshop organized by Communities Empowerment Initiative in partnership with Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State to reduce Illicit drugs and promote peaceful coexistence.
He decried the level of decay in the society, with parents unable to train their children but rather consider paper qualification, which has forced many youths to roaming about the streets.
Azi applauded the local government for organizing the enlightenment campaign to reduce drug addiction and other dangerous substances, which are destroying the youths.
He called on parents to ensure that they live no stone unturned by doing something that can better the lives of the youth.
The Executive Director of CEI, Dr. Juliana Mafwil, appealed to parents to inculcate moral discipline in their children.
Mafwil said the sensitization was aim at calling on parents to have collective responsibility of building the future of their ward to grow and be leaders of tomorrow.
Mafwil urged parents to come together to see how we can address the menace of drug abuse and illicit drinking in our society, especially in Jos North Local Government Area, which has high rate of crime and criminality.
