The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Arunma Oteh, has emerged the West African Business Woman of the Year 2014.
This was contained in a statement issued by the commission in Lagos on Friday.
The West African Business Woman of the Year Award is part of the All Africa Business Leaders’ Awards, Africa’s most prestigious business awards, organised by the CNBC Africa.
According to the statement, other winners are Atedo Peterside, Chairman IBTC Holdings, who won West African Business Leader of the Year Award; and Tayo Oviosu, the Chief Executive Officer of Paga, who emerged the West African Entrepreneur of the Year.
Chude Jideonwo of Red Media won the West African Young Business Leader of the year, while Subomi Balogun clinched the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The statement said that Oteh won the award for being instrumental to the growth and development of Nigeria’s economic landscape.
It quoted Oteh as expressing gratitude to CNBC Africa for the gesture and noting that CNBC changed the landscape of business reporting by connecting Africa to the world.
According to the statement, Oteh said that the success achieved by the commission and the capital market resulted from teamwork.
She said: “I am really honoured that I am able to be some evidence of excellence.
“I also want to say that this recognition means much to me. I had vision and I had a team around me – SEC staff who tapped into that vision.
“We also have capital market operators who have aligned behind our vision. I want to celebrate SEC staff, capital market operators and Nigerians.”
The statement said that Oteh noted that the commission had created an enabling environment for businesses operators and Nigeria to realise their potential.
According to the statement, Joe Nazzal, the Head of Reserve of the ABN Group, said at the event that nominees for the AABLA awards exemplified the game-changing vision that helped to grow the West African economy.
It quoted Nazzal as saying that the nominees helped in economic development in one way or the other.
