The Osun State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association on Friday directed doctors in all public hospitals to join their striking colleagues in the state by embarking on a three-day strike.
This was contained in a communiqué issued in Osogbo and signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the association, Dr. Suraj Ogunyemi and Dr. Adeola Ajibare, respectively.
It directed doctors and consultants at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife and those working in Primary Health Centres in the local government areas to join the strike in solidarity with their colleagues from February 17 to 19.
The statement said members of the association would also stage a peaceful protest to the Osun State House of Assembly on February 16.
It said after the three days solidarity strike, the association would hold an emergency meeting on February 22 to review the situation.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Association of Medical and Dental Officers in the state hospitals had in September 2015 embarked on strike over unpaid salaries.
The strike by the association was also to protest the non-remittance of money deducted from their salaries for their various cooperative societies and other statutory deductions.
Aside from the payment of these arrears, the association also asked government to put in place machinery for immediate implementation of the revised CONMESS circular for medical and dental officers in the state.
Similarly, the Association of Resident Doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo has also been on strike for more than five months over unpaid salaries.
