Secretary to the National Planning Commission, Bassey Akpanyung Tuesday inaugurated the Joint Planning Committee (JPC) for the 21st Nigerian Economic Summit (NES #21)
The Nigerian Economic Summit is an annual economic stakeholders’ forum being organised jointly by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), representing the Private sector and National Planning Commission (NPC), representing the Public Sector
Members of the JPC were drawn from both the Public and Private Sectors and the aim was to ensure effective delivery of the 2015 Summit, the twenty-first.
Akpanyung stated that “indeed the Economic Summit has become the largest and most prestigious annual economic forum for policy makers and captains of industry from the public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy, as well as representatives of the academia, civil society organizations and development partners to interact and share thoughts on key issues and challenges facing the Nigerian economy, with a view to evolving a common strategy and policy framework for addressing them”
He also stressed that the efficacy of the public private partnerships (NESG/NPC) exemplified by the Summit in Nigeria has been proven in developed and emerging markets leading to unprecedented growth and development in leading countries of the world, insisting that this conviction led Chief Earnest Shonekan to inaugurate the first annual Nigerian Economic Summit in 1993.

This conviction led Chief Earnest Shonekan to inaugurate the first Annual Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) in 1993, as a national platform to promote public private sector dialogue towards accelerated national development’’.
Accordingly, the NPC Sribe also said that this year’s Summit is coming up at a unique time in the history of the country as it will be the first to be held under the new administration.
It is expected that the Summit conclusions will be helpful towards articulating strategies for ensuring effective implementation of the change agenda that will help the new administration in making Nigeria’s socio- economic environment globally competitive.
Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Laoye Jaiyeola in his remarks, stated that it will be difficult to have a clear- cut discussion on Nigerian economy without the key public institutions and the organized private sector.
He pledged that this year’s summit will take a holistic look at the facets of the economy as well as how to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth.
Jaiyeola, also disclosed that government have been implementing the recommendations of the summit like in the Pension reforms, the privatization et, but was quick also to add that it requires improvement.
