The National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Thursday in Jos, the Plateau state capital held talks with the representatives of the Christian and Muslim religion bodies to seek ways of ending incessant farmers/herdsmen clashes.
Speaking at the parley, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN Plateau state, Rev. Dr. Soja Bewarang and the representative of the Jama’atu Nasir Islam (JNI) in Plateau state, Mallam Sani Mudi, both sued for tolerance among their subjects in order to restore peace in the state.
In their separate speeches at a one day stakeholders’ meeting on how to end Farmers/ Herdsmen clashes, the religious leaders spoke on the need for all citizens to respect human life and toe the path of peace.
The Forum, which was packaged by NOA provided an opportunity for youth leaders and the community leaders to proffer possible ways of bringing to an end the protracted feud between Christians- cum farmers on the other hand and Fulani herdsmen.
The CAN president, Rev. Dr. Soja Bewarang who appreciated NOA for organizing the forum to discuss the common things affecting citizens of the state and the country at large, faulted the new system of administration where traditional rulers are no longer recognised in the state of affairs.
According to him, “In the past, chiefs were respected, and were the custodian of the peoples’ values; they also served as security officers to their people, where they helped in check-mating influx of visitors”.
He said, in those days, there was nothing like the new found nomadic Herdsmen and the township Fulanis, which according to him is negatively poising security threat.
He recalled that before now, when the Fulanis come they would first report to the chiefs or traditional leaders and he will make sure that there were no bad eggs among them, after which they would be shown a place to settle and carry out their grazing activities when harvests were done.
He regretted that the new set of Fulanis now would even force his cows to your farm and even if you say anything they will threaten your life, advising that unless the good old virtue is revived and practiced returning peace will be elusive.
The representative of JNI, Sani Mudi, promised that the leadership of JNI would continue to support activities that will bring lasting peace between farmers and herdsmen in the state and the country at large.
