Nigeria’s Oluwatoyin Adesanmi has won another gold medal for the country in the 63kg women’s weightlifting event at the ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Adesanmi, a Lagos State born athlete, totalled 207kg ahead of her compatriot, Obioma Okoli, who also won the silver medal in the snatch, clean and jerk event.
India’s Puman Yadav picked the bronze medal with a total of 202kg.
Nigeria is now placed ninth on the Commonwealth Games’ medals standing, with two gold, three silver and one bronze medals in her kitty.
Nigeria has so far won all its medals in the Commonwealth Games in weightlifting.
In other events decided on Sunday, Nigeria’s Gloria Asunmu came second with 11.43 seconds behind Jamaica’s V. Campbell-Brown in the first 100 meters heat.
In men’s 100 meters, Mark Jelks, a US born Nigerian athlete, returned 10:28 seconds to win the Round 1 Heat 3, just as his compatriot, Ogho-Egwero, also qualified behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine.
Jelks decided to switch from competing for the United States to compete for Nigeria in 2014, despite being born and raised in the United States.
With his grandfather hailing from Warri South in Nigeria, he was able to get a Nigerian passport.
His words: “There are more opportunities here (Nigeria) to flourish, to be great and to have the opportunity to get to the bigger stage.
“So that was the deciding factor for me.”
Jelks was suspended from competition for two years after failing to notify the United States Anti-Doping Agency of his location on three separate occasions in an 18-month period.
In Long jump event, Nigeria’s duo of L. Balogun with 3.54 and Ekioukewe placed last in a field of 11.
