Prof. Bem Angwe, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, has expressed the commission’s readiness to work on the report of alleged extra-judicial killings levelled against Nigeria by Amnesty International.
This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by Fatimah Agwai, the Chief Press Officer of the commission.
Amnesty International on August 4 released a report alleging “Extra-Judicial Killings” on the part of the military in the North-East.
A copy of the report was later submitted to the commission by Amnesty International.
“The Nigerian Government does not have a deliberate policy that supports any form of human rights violations, including extra-judicial killings,” Angwe said.
Angwe noted that the Army acted on the report, as a panel was set up.
He said: “Following the report, the Nigerian Army set up a penal of inquiry to look into the issues raised in the report.
“And the penal met with the commission to share information concerning the matter.”
Angwe also assured Amnesty International that the NHRC would give their findings serious considerations if verified.
