The Muslim Rights Concern has called on governments at all levels to urgently address the rising wave of kidnapping and armed robbery in the country.
The Director of MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, made the call in a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos to condemn the recent kidnap of Sheikh Adam Idoko.
Akintola said Idoko, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Chief Imam of the University of Nsukka, was kidnapped by unknown armed men in his country home, Ogrute Enugu-Ezike in Nssukka, Enugu State.
He said: We are shocked by this ugly incident, this is one kidnap too many.
“We strongly condemn this act of brigandage and we appeal to government at all levels to take urgent steps to address the menace.
“We also urge security agencies to do everything humanly possible to secure the release of the captive.”
Akintola commended President Muhammadu Buhari for recently directing the recruitment of 10,000 more police officers.
He also urged the President to declare an emergency in the security sector in the South East.
Akintola called on Muslims nationwide to pray for the safe return of Idoko.
