More than 203 potential bidders have expressed interest in the divestiture of 80 per cent share in the 10 generation companies of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.
The Managing Director of NDPHC, James Olotu, disclosed this after the 28th board meeting of the company held on Friday at the State House, Abuja.
Vice-President Namadi Sambo chaired the meeting.
The Niger Delta Power Holding Company is the operator of the National Integrated Power Projects of the Federal Government.
The NDPHC Board had earlier approved the divestiture of 80 per cent of the shares in the 10 Generation Companies through public tender.
Olotu said that as at Thursday, about 4,380 megawatts of electricity was on the national grid at peak generation.
He said that from the total 4,380 megawatts, the NDPHC was contributing 32.17 per cent, which translated to about 1,200 megawatts.
The managing director expressed optimism that by December, NDPHC would have been able to add about 4,000 additional megawatts into the grid.
The Minister of State for Power, Hajiya Zainab Kuchi, also told correspondents that the board had resolved that proceeds from the divestment of the 10 NDPHC generation companies would be re-invested.
Kuchi said that the board had approved a new time table for the re-investment process to be jointly carried out by the Bureau of Public Enterprises, the NDPHC, the Federal Ministry of Power and the Board.
She noted that the Board had received progress report on all the NDPHC projects under construction, and advised advised all contractors to adhere strictly to the December deadline.
Kuchi said the Board had also approved that a leading accounting firm, Price Water Coopers, be contracted to audit the account of the NDPHC.
She gave the assurance that the government would deliver electricity to the people.
“This government met power at 1,800 megawatts and within a space of two years has taken it to 4,500 megawatts,” she said. “Considering the delivery of NIPP projects under the auspices of NDPHC, they can expect better. Our target between now and December is 10,000 megawatts.”
The Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam; the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Modupe Adelabu; and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali, were among those that attended the meeting.
