The 12th annual Med-View Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Games has received N1 million boost from the makers of soft drink, BIG Cola.
Deji Elumoye, the Chairman, Lagos State Council of the NUJ, made the disclosure on Thursday at news conference to herald the Games scheduled for October 24 to 29 at the National Stadium, Lagos.
Elumoye said the union was delighted that a new sponsor had shown interest in the Games, adding that the event would show that journalists also participated in sports.
He said that it was imperative for journalists to keep fit and healthy by engaging in sports, adding: “We want people to know that we not only report but also participate in sports.”
Elumoye appealed to participants to desist from engaging mercenaries at the Games, saying that the aim was to mingle and socialise.
He said: “We are going to feature 5-A-Side football because of the issue of mercenaries.
“We want real journalists to participate to mingle and to interact.”
Meanwhile, Isiaq Na’Allah, the Executive Director of Med-View Airline, the official sponsor of the Games, has said that it would continue to give the NUJ Games the needed support.
Na’Allah also said Med-View understood and appreciated the importance of journalists to the development of any nation.
Sixteen media houses, grouped into four, would feature in the 5-A-Side football.
In Group A are Lagos State Ministry of Information, The Nation Newspapers, The Detective Newspapers and Voice of Nigeria.
Group B comprises The Sun, Vanguard, Champion and New Telegraph newspapers, while Group C has Lagos Television, Correspondents Chapel, New Nigeria and Business Plus.
DAAR Communications, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Federal Ministry of Information and the Source are in Group D.
Other sports to be feature in the Games are Athletics, Table Tennis, Ayo, Scrabble and Chess.
