The Senate President, David Mark, has described the victorious Golden Eaglets of Nigeria as the authentic heroes and future hope of the nation.
The Eaglets defeated their Mexican counterparts to emerge fourth time winner of FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Mark said he is proud of the boys.
He said: “I am very proud of the boys. I am very proud to be a Nigerian. These boys have sent a clear message to all Nigerians that ethnic or religion should not be our problem. We are united under one God and nation. The boys have demonstrated that with the collective will of all of us, Nigeria can be united and we can rule the World.”
Mark, who was to lead the nation’s delegation to cheer the Eaglet but couldn’t make the journey to the United Arab Emirates due to logistics reasons, watched the final match alongside the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba; and the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, in his Apo residence in Abuja.
“With this victory, it is a clear signal and a wake up call on the Super Eagles that Nigeria must be in Brazil for the World Cup in 2014,” Mark said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh,
Expressing regret over his inability to be physically present in Dubai due to logistic hiccups, Mark noted that the Eaglets lived up to the expectations of Nigerians.
Also, the Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, has congratulated the Golden Eaglets.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Ajunwa, Orji, who thanked the Golden Eaglets for doing Nigeria and the African continent proud by winning their fourth Under-17 World Cup, said their hard-earned victory over Mexico showed that they are a team to watch out for in future.
The sports loving governor said that the victory of the Golden Eaglets has further proved to the world that Nigeria is still a power house to reckon with in the round leather game.
Orji who said that God has started answering the prayers he offered in Israel called on the handlers of the Golden Eaglets to ensure that all the players are kept together for future championships.
According to him, the indomitable spirits of the players coupled with their courage contributed immensely to all the victories the team recorded throughout the championship.
The victory of the Golden Eaglets, according to Governor Orji, has united the whole country even as he called on all Nigerians irrespective of religion or ethnicity to key into the transformation programme of the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government, which he said had opened a window of progress and development in the country.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has described the Eaglets display as “phenomenal, entertaining, and near perfect”, adding that the trophy was a centenary gift Nigerians would never forget in a hurry.
In a statement by his Special Adviser Media, Uche Anichukwu, Ekweremadu said: “I am indeed proud of these boys for this superlative and emphatic victory. But beyond the euphoria that comes with it, I believe that this is God reminding us through these young men that a united and one-minded Nigeria where everyone is given the opportunity to do what he or she knows best to do without recourse to nepotism, ethno-religious discrimination, and political manipulations is simply unstoppable.
“It has been quite long we saw a thing like this and for me it is a Centenary gift that calls for sober reflections on what and where we ought to be as a nation”
He urged all Nigerians to roll out the drum to celebrate the boys and fatherland.
The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has also congratulated the Golden Eaglets.
A statement by the Director of the Bureau of Communications and Strategy of the Office of the Governor, Semiu Okanlawon, Governor Aregbesola congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan, the Minister of Sports, the Nigeria Football Federation, the players, the coaches and other officials that made the feat possible and everyone that had hand in the team’s success.
According to him, the players, a microcosm of Nigerian heterogeneity, demonstrated the Nigerian spirit of aspiration, dedication and triumph over obstacles to defeat the other strong and formidable teams they encountered along the way.
This, he said, is a clear demonstration of what Nigerian youths can do under the right leadership.
