The Kogi State Government has sacked the Chinese firm handling the maintenance of Greater Lokoja Water Works, due to the exorbitant running cost of about N100 million monthly.
The state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Salami Ozigi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lokoja on Monday.
He said that the Governor, Yahaya Bello, had to relieve the Chinese firm of their contract due to the monthly running cost of N100 million, which was too high for the state to afford, hence the decision that a Technical Team takes over in the interim.
Ozigi said it was unreasonable, unpatriotic and unsustainable for government to be spending such huge amount on water supply monthly only for the state capital.
He explained that the technical team would handle the running of the Plant in the interim, noting that the governor has mandated the ministry to give the team the needed support to ensure effective performance.
Ozigi noted that Governor Bello had on Saturday visited the Water Works for an inspection and assessment where he expressed satisfaction with what was on the ground and the capability of the technical team.
While commending the residents for their support and understanding, the commissioner appealed to the people that the issue of water scarcity in Lokoja and its environs would soon be resolved.
Ozigi said: “Government is discussing with the management of PHCN to improve power supply to the treatment plant for effective supply of potable water to the people of Lokoja and its environs.
“Our governor is committed to fulfilling his promise to ensure provision of adequate water supply to the people of Lokoja.”
