A Member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Adamu Entonu, has urged the House to intervene in plans by the state government to cede parts of Agatu community to herdsmen for grazing purpose.
Entonu made the appeal in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.
He expressed concern that such plans would plunge the Agatu community into crisis.
He said: “This despicable act of ceding Agatu lands to Fulani herdsmen by some self-acclaimed stakeholders in connivance with Governor Samuel Ortom is a dangerous act capable of causing mayhem in the community.
“It is therefore imperative to state categorically that the entire people of Agatu and the 10 district heads are calling the attention of security agencies and the Federal Government to intervene quickly.”
According to Entonu, the people of Agatu are yet to recover from the last attack in June 2016.
Entonu said: “Our farmlands were taken from us, children and women killed in numbers and our homes desecrated.
“The traumatic experience is still fresh in the mind of our people yet again evil men and tall lies at it again.”
He said that persons behind the ceding plot do not have the mandate of the Agatu people.
Earlier, Entonu submitted to the House a petitioned by the Agatu Traditional Council kicking against the ceding plan.
Parts of the letter reads: “We humbly appeal for your urgent intervention in the wrongful ceding of Agatu land by the Caretaker Chairman of Agatu, Mr Michael Inalegwu, Chief Ona and Captain Mohammed Olotu.
“These people claimed to have secured the mandate of the entire Agatu people and the 10 district heads for this purpose.
“We wish to state categorically that we the 10 district heads and the entire people of Agatu never gave our consent for this dangerous and despicable transaction.
“This situation has created a very big keg of gun powder ready for explosion any moment from now.
“Your kind and urgent intervention is highly needed to forestall another blood bath in Agatu.”
