The House Leader of the Plateau State House of Assembly and member representing Riyom Constituency, Hon. Daniel Dem, has commended the National Orientation Agency for organising programmes to bridge the gap that has existed between the electorate and their representatives.
Dem was commenting on the one day sensitization programme organized for elected representatives on the need to promote trust, build confidence in public offices, as well as enhance authority and legitimacy of governance.
According to Dem: “The programme is significant because they need to know that the function of a legislator is not to build and construct infrastructures in the constituencies they represent.
“Inasmuch as such philanthropic gestures are necessary, the electorates also need to know that our primary responsibility is to make laws.
“Apart from the fact that there is the need for people to be regularly and constantly briefed on the activities of government, it is also important that they are carried along in the process of governance.”
Consequently, Hon. Dem, while answering questions from our correspondent on issues that bother on the recent activities that took place on the floor of the House, said the Committee report on Peace and Security that was recently presented into law was unanimously adopted by the House for study and comments.
He said: “The committee was set up as a result of matter of urgent public importance that borders on security.
“A committee was set up to look into the matter and now we have the report, which has been adopted but we are yet to look into the report and make comments.”
