Kemi Olunloyo, the first daughter of a former Governor of Oyo State in the Second Republic, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, has been deported from Canada.
The top journalist cum Public Relations expert’s problem started with her father after her return from the United States of America to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, with her two kids.
The story became messy then to the point that the former Oyo State Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, and the late Ibadan popular politician,Pa Lamidi Adedibu, had to intervene before the crisis died down. In fact, several other popular Ibadan indigenes also stormed the Molete, Ibadan home of Dr. Omololu Olunloyo to settle issues between father and daughter. After the matter went underground, simply because of the intervention of the people around, Kemi fled to Canada in June 2007, filed asylum refugee status and was accepted after three days of interview. After checks and investigation, she was given a work permit, free medical care and a five-year temporary visa until her claim was heard by the Immigrant and Refugee Board of Canada.
However, her claim was declined in 2010 after Canadian Immigration said she was still a resident in the US at the time she entered their country, making her ineligible due to article IE of the US convention. The Oyo State born activist and international entertainment journalist filed an appeal in 2012, which was declined after her visa had expired, with Canadian authorities saying she could then go home since Nigeria is no longer a dangerous place for journalists and she is not at risk of torture or death.
She was reportedly imprisoned for a week by the Canadian authority before she was deported in August 2012 as a result of that decision.
Two months after her return, Kemi, who has been advocating for peace in Nigeria during her years in Canada, launched her Non-Governmental Organisation, Stop Violence Nigeria, on October 8, 2012. The NGO aims to educate Nigerians on ways to end violence or stop it before it begins.
Another issue that led to Kemi’s deportation was her excesses in the country. Kemi was said to have blasted the conservative government’s decision to scrap the gun registry in Canada, meaning that if anyone was killed, there would not be a record of who the gun was registered to. She was said to have embarked on this fully after her successful fight for several Canadian families and helping Toronto police nab almost 20 suspects in gun murders.
