The Katsina State Government says N760 million has been earmarked, in conjunction with the United Nations Children Fund, for the provision of water and sanitation in 18 local government areas.
Alhaji Aminu Dayyabu, the Executive Director, Katsina State Rural and Water Sanitation Agency, told newsmen on Thursday in Katsina that the money would be used for construction of bore-holes and modern toilets.
Dayyabu said that the state government had paid N380 million as its counterpart funding, while UNICEF provided the same amount for the projects.
He said that the money would be spent in 2017 as part of the move to provide clean water in the rural areas to address the problem of open defecation.
Dayyabu listed the local government councils that would benefit from the projects as Sabuwa, Kafur, Dandume, Danmusa, Batsari, Charanchi and Mani.
Others are: Faskari, Bakori, Safana, Dutsinma, Musawa, Sandamu and Maiadua.
The RUWASSA chief said that already, 712 hand pumps and many VIP latrines had been constructed in communities and schools in 11 local government areas from May 2015 till date.
Dayyabu said that the state government, in collaboration with members of the state House of Assembly and political appointees, had pledged to rehabilitate and construct 1,100 boreholes in 361 wards.
The official said that the benefiting communities were involved in the maintenance and supervision of facilities such as hand pumps and solar bore-holes to ensure sustainability.
Dayyabu said: “All community leaders are involved in the supervision at the level of survey, drilling and installation of hand pumps and solar bore-holes.
“We will ensure that communities benefiting from the facilities are satisfied with the quality of work before payment to the contractors.”
Dayyabu lauded the state government and UNICEF for minimising the problem of water shortage and open defecation in the state.
