There was pandemonium at the Taraba State secretariat of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party along Barde Way in Jalingo, Taraba State on Thursday when angry youths descended on the supporters of the party there.
The convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan, who was in the state in continuation of his campaign for the February 14, 2015 presidential election, was also attacked.
It will be the third time Jonathan’s convoy would be attacked since the campaign started.
The first two attacks took place in Katsina and Bauchi States.
On Thursday, the windshields and side glasses of some of the vehicles in the presidential convoy were smashed by the youths before security agents could disperse them.
This was before Jonathan got to the venue of the campaign.
The youths, who descend on the secretariat of the PDP after the campaign, were said to be angry over what they described as “presidential falsehood”.
Some of the aggrieved youths who spoke to The Eagle Online in confidence, said former President Olusegun Obasanjo deceived them several years ago to vote him based on the promise that he will develop infrastructure on the Mambilla Plateau, but did nothing.
They said it was the same promise President Jonathan repeated during his speech at the campaign on Thursday.
The youths actually left the stadium, venue of the campaign, for the party office to express their anger.
Jonathan had at the rally said he had awarded contract for the construction of Mambilla Dam.
His government was also said to have released $30 billion for the distribution of the electricity that will be generated from the dam.
Jonathan’s convoy was initially stoned along Palace Way in Jalingo before he headed for the Jolly Nyame Stadium where he addressed supporters.
Reports have it that the number of security personnel at the rally outnumbered party members.
The state Organizing Secretary of the PDP, Julius Kwakaa, told The Eagle Online on the phone that the party’s office was vandalized and his personal car parked there destroyed.
The former Chairman of the PDP in Taraba State, Alhaji Abdulmumini Vaki, in reacting to the visit of the President, described Jonathan as an unrepentant liar.
According to Vaki, the Mambilla Dam is situated in his community and no contractor had allegedly visited the place.
