The Joint Union of Local Government Employees in Nasarawa State said
on Thursday that it would resist any attempt to slash the salaries of
its members by 35 per cent.
The Chairman of the National Union of Local Government Employees in
the state, Comrade Abdullahi Abubakar, made the declaration on behalf
of the workers at a special meeting to discuss the matter in Lafia.
Abubakar also said the joint union would explore all legal means to
resist any attempt to slash the pay.
“We have shown understanding and cooperated with the state government
enough, so we also expect them to give priority to the welfare of
workers and pay us our money in full,” he said.
Abubakar advised the government to pay the workers their April
salaries 100 per cent in order to avoid any strike in the state.
Also, Samson Titi-Jatau, the Chairman of the National Union of
Teachers in the state, decried the manner in which the welfare of
local government workers was being neglected.
Malam Abdullahi Adeka, the Chairman of the NLC in the state, promised
to discuss the issue with the state government.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the union was formed by the
four existing unions in the local government system to jointly pursue
issues affecting them.
The unions are NULGE, NUT, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses
and Midwifery and the Medical and Health Workers Union.
