Kelechi Iheanacho has revealed the advice given him by Pep Guardiola on how to be a top striker – watch Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi.
The Nigerian youngster is tipped for big things at Manchester City with previous Blues’ boss Manuel Pellegrini and now Guardiola showing faith in his ability by giving him first-team game time.
Guardiola worked with Messi at Barcelona and then spent three years watching Lewandowski score goals for fun at Borussia Dortmund and his own Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
And the Spaniard believes 20-year-old Iheanacho should study their styles closely to improve his own striking skills.
“Of course the manager tells me about them, that I should really watch them and see what they are doing and make sure I am improving on what I am not doing,” said Iheanacho.
“They are great strikers, big stars so you need to see how you can improve your game, to work in training.
“They both have great qualities and they have a lot of different abilities.
“It’s important of course that you be yourself, you are your own player, you have your own style but of course you need to see what they are doing too.
“You are not going to be the same as them, everyone’s quality is different so you are going to stick to your quality and take some things they are doing and put it into your game and keep working hard.”
Iheanacho, who has scored five goals in 15 appearances this season, is currently filling the gap left by Sergio Aguero who was given a four-match ban for his second red card of the season against Chelsea recently.
“Sergio’s absence is a good opportunity for me to get in and fill the gap now he is not around so I have to work hard and fill the space and help the team get the points they need.”
