West Brom Albion manager, Alan Irvine, has backed £10 million club record signing, Brown Ideye, to bounce back from his midweek penalty agony.
Ideye missed a spot kick in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup penalty shootout against League Two Oxford but got off the hook as the Baggies scraped through.
To add to that, the Nigerian international failed to open his Albion account in 120 minutes against the side bottom of the league ladder.
Irvine, whose side travels to Swansea on Saturday (today), said: “Obviously, he’ll be disappointed – the last thing he’d have wanted to do is miss the penalty in the penalty shootout.
“I would certainly hope the penalty miss wouldn’t affect him. The fact is strikers miss chances.
“You’ve got to accept they can’t score them all. The best goalscorers have always moved on quickly from a missed chance.
“I’ve been fortunate to have worked with some top goal scorers – and it’s almost as if it never happened, it is just ‘where is the next chance coming from?’.
“People were raving about Brown after the Southampton game last weekend.
“People were talking about him in terms of some of the legendary strikers at this club when I was doing my post-match interviews.
“It just shows how things can change so quickly. Suddenly he has gone from this legendary figure to someone people are worried about!”
“The best goal scorers have always moved on quickly from a missed chance.”
Irvine says he has seen enough of Ideye in training to be confident he will be a hit in the Premier League.
He added: “He’s shown an ability to finish in training and I would expect he’ll be able to take that into games given chances.
“Of course, like every other striker, he’s desperate to score goals.
“He’s taken lots of penalties before, he took them for Kiev, he’ll probably take penalties again; so I didn’t see a big reason for me to discuss that with him.
“He will benefit from getting 120 minutes as a number of the boys will have done.
“I don’t think you can be a goalscorer if you get badly affected psychologically by missing a chance.”
