Gordon Obuah, Chief Security Officer to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has said he did not initiate any memo for the construction of campaign stages for his then boss.
In a statement by his lawyer, Andrew Itsekiri, Obuah said he also did not receive a penny for the construction of any stage for Jonathan.
The lawyer equally said the company which was said to have received $6.9 million for the construction of campaign stages did not belong to Obuah and that he has no relationship with the company whatsoever.
He challenged those behind the fabrication to produce evidence from the Corporate Affairs Commission linking his client with the ownership of the company that purportedly received the $6.9 million.
He also challenged the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to identify the person or the owner of the company to whom the purported money was paid.
Itsekiri also pointed out that resorting to media trial was a calculated attempt by the government to discredit his client after agencies of government had investigated him and found nothing with which to nail him.
He said Obuah was confronted with this same allegation by the Department of State Services and that nothing incriminating was found against him.
He wondered why the government had now resorted to media trial.
Itsekiri said: “Our client did not know anything about the purported transactions. He did not initiate any memo to the then Presidency. It is a mere cheap blackmail.
”The authorities have a duty to dispel claims that the whole idea is to hurriedly charge him to court with no single shred of evidence to convict, with the expectation that his innocence can only be established years later, after his reputation would have been irredeemably dented before an unsuspecting public.”
While advising the government to concentrate on governance, Itsekiri said the President Muhammadu Buhari administration “would be setting a dangerous precedent by deliberately subjecting innocent people to media trial, knowing clearly that the cases are seriously bereft of facts and evidence, linking such persons to the crimes advertised”.
