Guus Hiddink has resigned from his position as head coach of the Netherlands after less than a year in charge.
Hiddink succeeded Louis van Gaal as manager shortly after the Manchester United boss guided the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Brazil, but he has come in for some heavy criticism during his brief spell in charge.
With the Netherlands third in their Euro 2016 qualifying group and facing the possibility of a play-off to reach the finals in France, the 68-year-old has decided to step down with his assistant, Danny Blind, taking over.
“I am sorry it went this way,” Hiddink said on the KNVB’s official website.
“I thought it was an honour to again coach the Dutch national team and I wish my successor, the staff and the players every success on the way to the European Championships in France.”
