Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State on Monday called on the Federal Government to review upward the allowances being paid to National Youth Service Corps members in the country.
Bello made the call at the passing out of Batch B corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Paiko, Paiko Local Government Area of the state.
He said that the need for an upward review of the allowances of the corps members was long overdue considering the current economic reality in the country.
Bello said: “I am aware that the economic recession is affecting so many things, even some state governments are finding it difficult to pay workers’ salaries.”
The governor directed the Secretary to the State Government to immediately restore the payment of N3,000 as the state government special allowance to every corps member posted to the state.
The special allowance from the state was stopped by the immediate past administration.
Bello said: “Your welfare matters are considered a priority at all times in other to motivate you to contribute your quotas to the development of our state.”
He warned employers of labour against rejecting corps members that would be posted to them.
The governor said that the state government would not tolerate the rejection of any corps members by them.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of the NYSC, Theresa Arokoyo, thanked the governor for his continued support to the scheme in the state.
Arokoyo pleaded with Bello to intervene by improving the terrible condition of the temporary orientation camp.
