The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has advocated the return to traditional values of integrity, fairness, diligence, good neighbourliness and honesty espoused in Islam and Christianity to address challenges confronting the nation.
The Governor made the call at the formal opening ceremony of the 30th Annual National Conference of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria held at the University of Ilorin.
Ahmed, who identified lack of leadership, poverty and good education as factors for insurgency in Nigeria, stressed the need to imbibe religious values with a view to guaranteeing good governance and national integration.
Governor Ahmed called on Nigerians to build on the heterogeneity of the country as a source of strength as exemplified by the United States of America.
According to him, Islam preaches peace, love and good neighbourliness, “therefore, ethnic plurality should constitutes a source of strengthen for national integration rather than a division”.
Governor Ahmed, who congratulated FOMWAN for the choice of Kwara State for the meeting, called on the Association to conduct a critical examination of family’s role in building national integration.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, at the conference charged Muslim women to make themselves relevant by lending their voices to national issues.
Alhaji Abubakar encouraged FOMWAN to advocate the eradication of corruption and girl-child education in order to ensure national development.
