The Captain of the Port Harcourt Golf Club in Rivers State, Ngeri Abere, has commended Nigerian Breweries Plc for its leading role in sports development in Nigeria.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 3rd Heineken Port Harcourt open golf tournament, sponsored by NB Plc, Abere noted that the company has been sponsoring golf in the club annually for a couple of years now.
He said: “This great company has been sponsoring this game in our club annually.
“We do pray that this shall not be the last.
“We do hope that subsequent tournaments shall be more elaborate.”
Abere used the occasion to call on other corporate organisations to sponsor more tournaments in the club, adding that more sponsorship of tournaments would make the game more popular and encourage younger players to develop interest in golf.
Earlier in his address, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Nicolaas Vervelde, said the company maintains a robust social responsibility agenda that it uses to connect positively with the society.
Vervelde, who was represented by the Public Affairs Manager (East), Nigerian Breweries Plc, Emete Tonukari, disclosed that the tournament was one of the platforms the company uses to sustain and make bigger its desire, hence the introduction of Heineken as the lead sponsor.
The MD reiterated that NB Plc as a leading beverage company in Nigeria with a strong brand portfolio was committed to delivering high quality brands to its numerous consumers.
The overall winner of the tournament, Barimeme Geruteh, who was a gold medalist in the amateur category at the last National Sports Festival, had in his speech, expressed gratitude to NB Plc for sponsoring the tournament and called on other corporate organizations and public spirited individuals to emulate the company to promote golf in Nigeria.
Other golfers who spoke to newsmen appealed to the Rivers State Government to come to the aid of young golfers in the state.
The event, which was held at the Golf section of the Port Harcourt club, Old GRA, featured golfers from Owerri, Aba, Port Harcourt, Oguta and other neighboring clubs.
