Germany’s Protestant Church has ordered the suspension of a local initiative to distribute condoms featuring quotes from Protestant reformer Martin Luther.
The Protestant Church in Germany’s Rhine region, said in a statement on Friday, that the initiative meant to spread Luther’s teachings 500 years after the Reformation was “fundamentally inappropriate”.
A church in Dusseldorf had been distributing condoms featuring Luther quotes, including “Here I stand, I can do no other.
It quoted other slogans such as “For whores and saints” to young people though in an effort to create awareness of Luther’s teachings.
“It would be best if the condoms are destroyed on site so that no more enter circulation,’’ Klaus Eberl, head of the consistory, said in the statement.
This year marks the 500th anniversary of the year that Martin Luther launched his efforts to reform the Catholic Church.
Report says the publication of his 95 Theses is considered a seminal event in the creation of the Protestant Church.
