The Federal Road Safety Corps on Wednesday announced the postponement of full enforcement of the installation of Speed Limit Device to September 1.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the decision was taken after a stakeholders meeting in Abuja.
A communiqué read by Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the commission, said light enforcement without booking commence on June 1.
The communique reads: “Implementation of the maximum road SLD for vehicles should commence with subtle enforcement with no booking from June 1, and full compliance to commence on September 1.
“Stakeholders should cooperate with FRSC in the course of the implementation of the device installation for vehicles.”
The statement said the regulation requires transport organisations, fleet operators and vehicle owners to install SLD for vehicles which conform to specifications as contained in the approval of Standard Organisation of Nigeria.
Oyeyemi added that SON should consider setting up deadline for all imported vehicles while National Automotive Council, should ensure that vehicles manufactured in the country are installed with the device.
The meeting was attended by representatives of stakeholders including SON, NAC, National Union of Road Transport Workers and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria.
Others are representatives of Petroleum and Tanker Drivers of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers, Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners and National Society of Engineers.
NAN recalls that some stakeholders, including RTEAN, NURTW and PTD/NUPENG, had earlier appealed for postponement of the enforcement, citing sensitisation and security situation in the North East, among other reasons.
