The Niger State Government has called on those living along the river banks to take precautionary measures to avoid being caught up in the flood and over flow of the rivers this year.
This is sequel to the recent prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency of likely flood in some states this year.
The State Commissioner of Information Culture and Tourism, Jonathan Vatsa, made this known on Tuesday in Minna.
Vatsa said government was concerned about the condition of the people during such natural disasters.
According to him: “Government has decided to take proactive measures aimed at making sure that the people make tentative arrangements until the flood subsidises.
“The government is concerned, especially now that NIMET has warned of impending flood disasters in some states, with Niger State also listed.
“We are calling on the people to be careful and not to allow the flood to come before taking any measure.
“We understand the attachment that some of the riverine communities have to their ancestral home because of their vocations, mostly fishing and farming, but we are advising them to at least move away until the river banks are free from overflow.
“We are aware that the people living downstream of Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro dams are often more vulnerable, the government is appealing to them to move up land till the rain subsides because we cannot afford the lost recorded in the past.”
Vatsa further assured that the government in its usual people oriented approach will do everything within the meagre available resources to ensure that the people are not devastated by the predicted flood in the state.
