A Jos, Plateau State Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced an ex-convict, Philip Hassan, to seven months imprisonment for burglary and theft.
The convict, a mechanic residing in Yingi area of Jos, was convicted for stealing jewelry valued at N300,000.
Hassan, who was earlier discharged from prison on August 8, was convicted for criminal conspiracy, trespass, mischief and theft.
The magistrate, Helen Danboyi, handed down the sentence after the convict pleaded guilty and begged the court for mercy.
In his plea, Hassan attributed his act to the work of the devil and current economic hardship.
The magistrate said the sentence was meant to serve as deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar act.
The prosecutor, Corporal Bashiru Karimu, had earlier told the court that one Aduke of Burken Academy, Jos reported the case to Anglo Jos police station on September 30.
Karimu said that on the same day Aduke received a call from her neighbour that the accused trespassed into her compound situated at Yingi.
He said the complainant rushed home and discovered that her gold bangles valued N300,000 were stolen.
She also discovered that the convict had caused N200,000 damage to her PVC ceiling and had stolen her bottle of spirit drinks.
Karimu said during investigation, the accused confessed to have committed the crime.
He said the offence committed contravened Section 97, 348, 327 and 287 of Penal Code.
