The Algerian Football Federation has named Belgian tactitian, Georges Leekens, as the new national team handler ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.
Our source in Algeria hinted that Leekens, 67, is expected on Friday in Algiers to finalize the deal with the Algerian FA.
Checks revealed that the Belgian, who is staging a return to Algeria, had previously managed Tunisia at the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
Leekens also guided Belgium national football team to the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals after a two-legged win against the Republic of Ireland in the qualifying play-off.
He was however sacked after failing to qualify for the second round.
The Algeria new boss has also managed a couple of top European and African clubs, including Club Brugge, Trabzonspor, Lokeren, Gent and Al Hilal.
The Algerian FA settled for Leekens after failing to seal contractual agreement with Frenchmen Philippe Troussier and Rolland Courbis.
Nigeria host the Fennecs of Algeria next month in MatchDay Two of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
