Delta designs website for local traders

The Delta State Government has commenced designing a website for local traders particularly in foodstuffs, including yam, garri to showcase and sell such items through the internet within and outside the state.
The Commissioner for Commerce in the state, Kingsley Emu, who dropped this hint in Asaba, noted that market has gone beyond physical location, pointing out that transactions could now be done anywhere, including the internet as long as the supporting infrastructures were available.
Emu said: “Market, technically, is not the physical location anymore.
“In fact, in elementary terms, market is a place where buyers and sellers come together and that place would necessarily not be a physical location.”
Emu spoke on the sidelines of a one-day workshop on grassroots women empowerment through Information Communication Technology, organised by the state government for local traders across the state.
According to Emu, the intention was to encourage the traders to open virtual markets with internet services where they could operate from without necessarily going to a physical location to hire stalls.
He said: “What we are trying to do now for the market women is very ingenious.
“The website will be out soon.
“Website is not a rocket science technology.
“It is what you can create within one month maximum and then teach people how to migrate to the platform.
“We have created the platform through this workshop and we are creating the infrastructure, which is the website, that is the main frame, where they can operate from.”
The Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Poverty Alleviation, Ann Chalokwu-Orumade, had told the participants that the workshop was geared towards creating awareness on easier methods of transacting business through the internet.
Chalokwu-Orumade said the workshop would, among other things, afford participants the opportunity to understand the meaning and concept of a cashless society and how to make the best of it through ICT.
