The Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Olivia Dazyem, has put the official figure of those that lost their lives in Tuesday’s bomb blast in the state capital, Jos, at 126, while 75 were injured.
In her address to journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in Jos on Wednesday. Dazyem said government had decided to settle all the medical bills of those injured as a result of the bomb blast.
The commissioner advised the general public not go near the two areas until clearance was given by the police.
She said government also commended all those who were involved in the rescue operations such as the National Emergency Management Agency, the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, Red cross, civil society organizations and other individuals for performing their duties professionally and with all sense of patriotism.
According to her, the Plateau State Specialist Hospital recorded 35 injured and 44 dead; the Bingham university Teaching Hospital, Jankwano had 30 injured and six dead; Our Lady of Apostle Hospital at the Jos University Teaching Hospital had 45 injured and 25 dead; Fomwan had injured and no death recorded; while Yellow Clinic in Nasarawa had one injured and one dead.
Dazyem lamented that investigation also revealed that congestion in the affected areas of the bomb blast contributed to the high number of casualties and hampered evacuation efforts.
Dazyem emphasized that the people should learn to comply with the law banning street trading, which is still in place.
She solicited the cooperation of the citizens of Plateau State to ensure the enforcement of the law.
Dazyem said the Plateau State Government sympathises with the families of those who lost their beloved ones in Tuesday’s twin blasts and also prayed for the fast recovery of those who were injured in the incident.
She added that the state Deputy Governor, Ignatius Lonjan, has visited the scene of the blast and the injured who are receiving treatment in various hospital.
