Prof. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, the Chief Medical Director of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, has warned striking resident doctors in the hospital to return to work or lose their pay.
Olatinwo gave the warning on Tuesday in Ilorin while speaking with newsmen.
He urged the doctors to return to work as the management of UITH would not hesitate to enforce the Civil Service Rule of “No Work, No Pay”.
Olatinwo said: “Unless we get a counter-directive from the Federal Government, who own the UITH, members of National Association of Residents Doctors shunning job may not be paid.”
Olatinwo, however, expressed optimism that the doctors would heed his call and return to work.
Reacting to the CMD’s call for his members to call off their strike, Dr. Ade Faponle, the President NARD, UITH branch, urged the management to pay their allowances.
Faponle said: “If there is economic recession, it should not be the UITH doctors alone who should bear the brunt to the exclusion of other health workers of the same status.”
The NARD members had gone on strike to protest non-payment of their allowances.
The industrial action, which is now in its second week, is taking its toll on patients.
Prof. Timothy Adedoyin, the Chairman of the reconciliatory committee constituted by UITH management to mediate with the striking doctors, said a meeting between the management and NARD had held to resolve outstanding issues.
Adedoyin however gave no assurance that the striking doctors would resume work very soon.
