The candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari, has opened up a lead over the incumbent and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, in Nigeria’s presidential election held over the weekend.
According to the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission as at the wee hours of Tuesday, Buhari is leading in 10 of the 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory so far announced.
He also has the simple majority of the votes counted so far.
From the records presented live on television by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, Buhari has a total vote of 8,520,436, while Jonathan polled 6,488,210.
This gives Buhari the edge by 2,032,226 votes.
For the states, Buhari won in Ogun, Kogi, Osun, Ondo, Oyo, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kwara and Kaduna,
For Jonathan, he won in Ekiti, Enugu, FCT, Nasarawa, Anambra, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Imo and Plateau.
Still being expected for official ratification on Tuesday morning by Jega are Lagos, Benue, Niger, Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Yobe and Taraba.
Others are Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa and Ebonyi States.
