Jamaican athlete Asafa Powell chose to be optimistic about the sport’s future after Usain Bolt retires in 2017.
Asafa Powell, in India for the first time to promote the Delhi Half marathon, backed fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt’s 100m record to stand for a good time.
Speaking to India Today, the former record-holder in the 100m said: “I would say it will stay the way it is. I don’t know who is going to come out and run faster than 9.58 seconds. That’s really an outstanding time and you know to have that statue and run so fast, it’s really unknown and for someone else to come out and really do that, you know I would be very surprised. I am not saying that is the limit, but I will be very surprised if someone comes out and break that record.”
Powell also picked Bolt as the greatest Olympian of all time over American swimming legend Michael Phelps.
While Bolt holds the recognition of doing the triple treble – winning the 100m, 200m and 100×4 relay Gold medals thrice – Phelps has won a staggering 23 Gold medals at the highest stage.
“I have to go with my country, with my sport. Usain is the greatest athlete of our time. Phelps has been tremendous. He is great. But I must be biased in this one,” he said.
Powell won his second Olympic Gold in the team relay event with Bolt in 2016 and had this to say about his team mate. “He is very confident. That stands out about him the most. He wants it and works very hard for everything. But his confidence has been the key.”
