As the call for the release of the over 200 schoolgirls of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State intensifies, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Barrister Adamu Usman, has condemned in strong terms the act of abduction of innocent girls by the Boko Haram sect, describing it as barbaric and un-Islamic.
Usman said on Wednesday in his message to mark this year’s Democracy Day in Minna, that the girls are innocent citizens who did not deserve such barbaric treatment.
The speaker frowned at the extremism introduced into Islam by the insurgents, saying that there is no compulsion in the religion.
He expressed dismay that as potential mothers, the future of the young and enterprising Chibok girls is being truncated by their senseless abduction.
According to him: “The girls are innocent citizens who are pursuing their legitimate goals.
“I commend the state government for cancelling the children and democracy days celebration in honour of the girls and other security challenges facing the country.”
While calling on the Federal Government, particularly security agencies, to always keep their strategies to themselves to facilitate the recovery of the girls, he urged them to organise prayers for the safe return of the girls.
